Following on from the 2020 Retaining Innovation Report TheHIll Oxford is developing and facilitating a series of Improving Patient Pathways activities. These projects aim to understand opportunities within our ecosystem and explore innovative solutions to improve pathways bringing groups of stakeholders together with our digital innovation community.
Improving Patient Pathways for Bloods runs from January-April 2021; the objectives of the project being to meet needs for remote blood taking:
- reducing footfall to hospital
- increasing staff efficiency
- improving patient experience
This topic has been highlighted due to the heightened difficulty of getting appropriate blood tests done for patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has exposed systemic frustrations. We are bringing together clinicians, GPs, innovators, commissioners, and patient representatives to talk about the barriers and enablers to start building a more seamless management of bloods between primary, secondary and community care:
TheHill has established a consortium with OUH plus primary care, OCC alongside a Health Foundation Research project to explore the options for phlebotomy outside clinical settings.
An OUH clinician has created a submission to the Digital Futures Inbox (add link) to improve phlebotomy workflow between Primary and Secondary care via a Q-Community grant.
A local company is piloting an engineering solution: provision of phlebotomy, using community buses and TheHill is working with the OUH improvement team and out-patient services TheHill is working with the OUH Improvement Team and out-patient services to assess this as a potential solution to the urgent short term need in phlebotomy; facilitating a group of interested clinicians to discuss new initiatives and share best practice.
Workshop #1 was for OUH clinicians, and took place on 5th February, 2021 with the theme “Exploring needs in secondary care” to identify the challenges clinicians are facing with getting blood test results, understand opportunities within the ecosystem, and explore innovative solutions to improve pathways
